The occupant of a ground floor apartment in Amsterdam East wanted an extension in which to place the kitchen. Together with Marc Koehler Architects I designed a greenhouse that directly connects with the balcony of the upstairs neighbours. By using a glass folding wall, the green covered garden seems to come inside.
In the modestly sized greenhouse I chose to put a small kitchen island to leave enough space for a dining table. The column cupboard (which houses the central heating boiler) forms a L-shaped element with the cupboards above the kitchen top. The element is finished with high-gloss paint so it fits well with the window frames of the greenhouse.
The kitchen counter and island are covered in cherry wood veneer, this results in a warm appearance that contrasts with the industrial resin floor.
